1.1 Geo-Coded Information System Antarctica (GIA)

From 1987 to 1993 the IfAG department Photogrammetric Research (PF) (IfAG = Institut für Angewandte Geodäsie – Institute for Applied Geodesy) was building up in Frankfurt am Main the “Geo-coded Information System Antarctica (GIA)”. This project was meant to be a basis for geo-scientific modeling of the interaction among topography, ice-kinematics, ice mass balance, climate and other geo factors from Antarctic regions, in particular from ice shelves and mountain regions.

1.2 Dynamic Processes in Antarctic Geo-Systems (DYPAG)

Nowadays the ice mass balance is a central subject for studies on the effects of man-made influences on the world climate where the Antarctic ice shelves hold a key position. On the one hand cold soil water flowing under the ice shelves has an important effect on the circulation processes in the oceans, and on the other hand a change of the ice mass confluence into the ice shelves has a direct relation to changes of the sea-level.

The relevant glaciological parameter for the mass balance of ice shelves is found by determining the ice mass inflow. Therefore, two regions were appointed for which the velocity fields of inflowing and outflowing ice should be studied using interferometric evaluation methods for ERS-1/2-SAR data. Additional airborne and spaceborne remote sensing data and in situ measurements were used to calculate the necessary digital elevation and ice thickness models. These data are required for model calculations on the vertical gradients of the horizontal velocity within the ice bodies and for a precise localisation of the grounding line between the floating ice shelves and those aground.
