Geographical Names

Geographical names are an elementary component of spatial base information. As proper names for individual localities or regions on the earth’s surface situated either on land or on water, they have to be distinguished from geographical generic names. So they are a matter of names which we meet in natural and cultural environment.

Geographical Names 1 : 250 000 (GN250)

The dataset is containing some 61 000 entries with the names of the towns, rural communities and their fractions, administrative units, landscapes, mountain ranges, islands, mountains, rivers, canals, lakes, oceans etc showing their attribute data for

  • Administrative classification (statistical code),
  • River systems (hydrographical area code)
  • Physio-geographical principal region (code)
  • Number of inhabitants, size (area, length), height (NN)

  • Planimetry (geographical,

    Gauss-Krueger and UTM coordinates)

  • Topographic map series and nomenclature of the map sheets where the feature is contained.

 

Geographical Names 1 : 1 000 000 (GN1000)

The dataset is consisting of an extract from GN250 and its ca 13 000 entries are covering only the names of the autonomous town and rural units as well as the administrative units with the corresponding attributes.
