Digital Landscape Models (DLM)
Through its provision of the DLM250 and the DLM1000 BKG fulfills the contribution of the Federal Government to the official basic geodata, and by the supply of the DTK250 and the DTK1000 also the Federal Government’s contribution to the official map series in accordance with the AdV resolution on the ATKIS® Palette of Components
Data flow ATKIS
Besides the Digital Topographic Maps of ATKIS® alternative cartographic editions for special tasks of the Federal administration are developed and maintained (example: military map series JOG 1501). As a rule, these tasks are based on separate agreements between authorities and/or ministeries with the objective of bundling and tightening cartography in a cross-departmental manner within the frame of the Federal administration.
Digital Topographic Maps (DTK)
The Land (state) survey administrations associated within the AdV presently revise the guidelines for the contents and appearance of the official topographic maps. The respective products shall in future be produced by means of computer-assisted procedures and – in addition to their traditional form as paper maps – also be distributed to users in digital form. The scale series of the Digital Topographic Maps (DTK) in the "Amtliches Topographisch-Kartographisches Informationssystem" (ATKIS®) (Authoritative Topographic – Cartographic Information System) will comprise the following map series:
- DTK 10 (1 : 10,000),
- DTK 25 (1 : 25,000),
- DTK 50 (1 : 50,000),
- DTK 250 (1 : 250,000), and
DTK 1000 (1 : 1,000,000).
BKG is responsible for the preparation of the map series DTK250 and DTK1000. These products will replace the previous map series General Topographic Map 1 : 200,000 ( TÜK200 ) and also the Map Germany 1 : 1,000,000. The specifications applying to the new map series are under preparation. BKG and its collaborators are elaborating appropriate design proposals for discussion with the relevant decision-makers.

Derivation of Digital Maps from the Digital Landscape Models
The Digital Topographic Maps shall in future be produced and updated directly from the basic geodata. The basic geodata are kept in the form of Digital Landscape Models in vector format. For the derivation of the DTK from the DLMs methods are to be developed which enable selection of information from the DLMs, formation of map elements and transformation of the latter into graphical symbols. Such a technology is presently being developed. For this purpose, BKG employs database-assisted raster data server and raster data processing systems as well as high-capacity cartographic vector data systems. Production of the military map series Joint Operations Graphics at the scale 1 : 250,000 from the DLM250 is intended for realization.
