Geodata Distribution

In Germany the Public Survey Authorities of the states (Länder – LVA) have the responsibility to set up and maintain the official topographic basic spatial data. As a result of an administrative agreement between the Federal Government and the federal states (Länder), the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) is responsible for small-scale map series.

The large-scale data in the scales 1:10 000 up to 1:100 000 are collected and distributed by the Public Survey Authorities of the states while the

BKG’s work is concentrating to the small-scale data of the scales 1:200 000 up to 1:1 000 000.

Länder-crossing basic spatial data of the whole territory of Germany can be purchased from the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy using our GeoDatenVertrieb. Selected products are also available online via the GeoDatenZentrum (GDZ).

Responsibilities of and a possible direct data supply by the public survey authorities of the Länder are not affected by this rule. That means, the customer is free to decide where to purchase the data.

The tasks of the GDZ and the GeoDatenVertrieb are among others to

• formally check and harmonize the large-scale data,
• give information for the customer how to use digital basic spatial data, and
• grant rights of use and to distribute the data.
