The Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie (Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy – BKG) and its predecessor, the Institut für Angewandte Geodäsie (Institute for Applied Geodesy – IfAG) has produced since 1981 maps of Antarctic regions on the basis of remote sensing data (satellite images and aerial photos) as well as of expedition results (geodetic, glaciologic, geologic, and geo-morphologic mappings), partly with national and international cooperation.
Some of the aerial photos date back to the year 1938, the earliest satellite images were taken in 1971.
Due to the decree transforming the IfAG into the BKG in 1997, these activities had to be given up.
Nevertheless, during the last years many enquiries manifested a persistent high demand for these results.
We have therefore decided to make all these maps, aerial photos and other documentations available for the public for free with indication of source (please observe the licensing conditions).
