Most of the images are vertical images on black and white negative film at a size of 23 x 23 cm. The images are taken in strips and continuously numbered. The stereoscopic overlap varies between 60% and 95%.
The image number is available from the Flight Survey Index Maps.

Photogrammetric photo flights 1938 / 1939
The images are scanned with 1200 dpi (mountains, rock outcrop) respectively with 600 dpi (ice shelf, sea) on a flat bed scanner. From this quick looks of about 400 x 400 Pixel are calculated. The quality of the paper positives is not equivalent to standard aerial images due to distortions of the paper and changes of color. In 1939 only oblique aerial images were taken. Orientation and identification of topographic objects are hampered by the fact that often only single images and not contiguous series of images survived the past decades.
Every image file was named by a combination of flight, film and image number and descriptions of the region shown on the image. Most of the regional names used for naming of the images had been written by K. Brunk on the back side of the paper images during his reconstruction of the flight paths (Brunk 1986). In some cases also notes earlier written on the images were used as file names if they are used in the satellite images published by Brunk.
In addition we provide selected images of about 2000 x 2000 pixel size with the geographical names of the topographic objects, but without guarantee of completeness and correctness. The geographical names were taken from the Norwegian map series Dronning Maud Land 1 : 250 000, sheets F5, F6, F7, G5, G6, G7, H5, H6, H6S, J5, J5S, J6, J6S, K5, K5S, K6, L4, L5, L6, M4, M5, M6 (Norsk Polarinstitutt 1961-1991), because this map series covers the survey area completely. German names given by the German Antarctic Expedition (DAE) 1938/39 were not noted in the images because most of the names refer to larger units which are mentioned in the file name or in the annotation at the lower margin.
To improve orientation and interpretation of the imaged topographic objects air survey index maps for each of the 8 flights are provided. For flights 1 to 3 these maps are based on topographic maps published by IfAG/BKG with an overlay of the flight lines published by Brunk (1986). For flights 4 to 8 a satellite image mosaic of LANDSAT TM, MSS and NOAA data is used as background information.
